From the reign of Tsar Nicholas II to the brutal cult of Stalin to the ebullient, uncertain days of perestroika, nowhere has the inextricable relationship between politics and culture been more starkly illustrated than in twentieth-century Russia. In the first book to fully examine the intricate and often deadly interconnection between Russian rulers and Russian artists, cultural historian Solomon Volkov brings to life the experiences that inspired artists like Tolstoy, Stravinsky, Akhmatova, Nijinsky, Nabokov, and Eisenstein to create some of the greatest masterpieces of our time. Epic in scope and intimate in detail, The Magical Chorus is the definitive account of a remarkable era in Russia’s complex cultural life.

Стильно оформленный подарочный альбом в оригинальном футляре с позолоченным узором и шелковым ляссе. . .Reflecting on the history of Russia, a country straddling two continents, one comes to the conclusion that it combines features of Eastern despotism and Western civilization - an explosive cocktail inevitably influencing the character of the Russian autocracy. .We trace our tale of Russian absolutism from its original sources to its tragic finale. The first chapter is dedicated to the birth of statehood in Russia. The second is an account of the history of the Rurikid princes - the first Russian dynasty. The third tells the story of the Time of Troubles, when the state was on the verge of complete ruin. The fourth begins with the coronation of Michael Romanov and ends with the execution of the last Russian autocrat, Nicholas II, and his family. We know the names of the leaders of popular revolts, kings and khans, but we often know very little about the personalities of the Russian tsars. These men and women were exceptional in many ways. Besides ruling one of the greatest empires that the world has ever known, many were fascinating personalities in their own right. Not all of them were ideal rulers. Like all human beings, they had their own faults, passions, feelings and habits. The only difference is that private individuals control only their own fates or those of their friends and relatives. .The personal whims of a sovereign, however, can have enormous consequences for the history of the entire nation and the fates of his or her subjects and their descendants. This helps to explain our fascination with the people who, for many centuries, ruled over the Russian lands.

The book is devoted to the Hermitage collection of Oriental arms and armour which traces many centuries of arms production history in different regions of the East – Turkey, Iran, India, Central and Southeast Asia, the Caucasus and the Far East. A significant part of the museum collection was formed in the first half of the 19th century and was based on the personal collection of Emperor Nicholas I. The collection continued to grow as a result of gifts from foreign rulers and diplomats, senior military officers and special acquisitions. It also included items seized as trophies in the numerous wars involving Russia in the countries of the East in the 19th century. A large number of these came from the arsenals of the conquered fortresses of Ardabil, Erivan, Erzurum and Adrianople, some were acquired from private collections. The book contains examples of different types of armaments, like armour, edged weapons and firearms, and spans a long chronological period from the late 15th to early 20th centuries. A focus is put on the decoration of the weapons. The book features Persian, Turkish, Caucasian, Indian and Japanese armaments with their unique shapes and ornaments dictated by national tradition. The edition is intended for historians, art historians, collectors, antique dealers and all art lovers.

From Peter the Great to Putin, this is the unforgettable story of St Petersburg - one of the most magical, menacing and influential cities in the world. St Petersburg has always felt like an impossible metropolis, risen from the freezing mists and flooded marshland of the River Neva on the western edge of Russia. It was a new capital in an old country. Established in 1703 by the sheer will of its charismatic founder, the homicidal megalomaniac Peter-the-Great, its dazzling yet unhinged reputation was quickly fashioned by the sadistic dominion of its early rulers. This city, in its successive incarnations - St Petersburg; Petrograd; Leningrad and, once again, St Petersburg - has always been a place of perpetual contradiction. It was a window on to Europe and the Enlightenment, but so much of the glory of Russia was created here: its literature, music, dance and, for a time, its political vision. It gave birth to the artistic genius of Pushkin and Dostoyevsky, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, Pavlova and Nureyev. Yet, for all its glittering palaces, fairytale balls and enchanting gardens, the blood of thousands has been spilt on its snow-filled streets. It has been a hotbed of war and revolution, a place of siege and starvation, and the crucible for Lenin and Stalin's power-hungry brutality. In St Petersburg, Jonathan Miles recreates the drama of three hundred years in this absurd and brilliant city, bringing us up to the present day, when - once more - its fate hangs in the balance. This is an epic tale of murder, massacre and madness played out against squalor and splendour. It is an unforgettable portrait of a city and its people.
