Being a child prodigy quite aware of his own genius and a passionate provocateur, this didn’t prove to be too big a challenge. His haggard, overstretched figures, extreme depiction of sexuality and self-portraits, in which he staged himself with emaciated facial expressions bordering between brilliance and madness, had none of the decorative quality of Klimt’s hymns of love, sexuality and yearning devotion. Instead, Schiele’s work spoke of a brutal honesty, one that would upset and irreversibly change Viennese society. Although his works were later defamed as “degenerate” and for a time were almost forgotten altogether, they influenced generations of artists―from Günter Brus and Francis Bacon to Tracey Emin. Today, his then misunderstood oeuvre continues to fetch exorbitant prices on the international art market. Egon Schiele (1890 - 1918) is nowadays regarded as one of the leading pioneers of Modernism in Austria. Although he already enjoyed some success during his lifetime and came to be considered Austria's greatest artist following his death, his outstanding impo rtance for art was recognized only in the early 1950s. Rudolf Leopold, the early collector of Schiele who first became interested in Schiele in the 1950s, has been instrumental in raising the international profile of Egon Schiele. Today, his art treasures are housed in the Leopold Museum in Vienna, which holds the world's largest and most outstanding collection of works by Schiele. Diethard Leopold, the collector's son and author of this volume, naturally grew up with Schiele's works, developing a special affinity and familiarity with the artist and his works. Egon Schiele is the painter who had the most long-lasting influence on the Vienna art scene after the great era of Klimt came to a close. After a short flirtation with the style of Klimt, his mentor, Schiele soon questioned the aesthetic orientation to the beautiful surface of the Viennese Art Nouveau with his rough and not easily accessible paintings. Many contemporaries found Schiele's expressive nudes and self-portraits, with their strange movements and morbid colours, to be ugly and even morally objectionable-criticism which culminated in criminalizing the painter as "obscene" and resulted in 1912 in an indictment and short jail sentence. Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele produced a prolific body of work before his early death at the age of twenty-eight in 1918. The oeuvre is comprised of a few hundred oil paintings and thousands of drawings and watercolors. Schiele's oils have often been reproduced and are well recognized. However, limited access to the fragile works on paper and dispersion among several collections have made for an unbalanced representation of his work as a draftsman. This book assembles drawings and watercolors from public and private collections and reproduces work from every year of the artist's career, beginning with the juvenilia and early academic studies. The focus means that work that is rarely reproduced is represented extensively, providing a unique opportunity to study the rapid artistic development of Schiele over the course of his brief twelve-year career. Eine Werkstatt fur das Gesamtkunstwerk Die Wiener Werkstatte, gegrundet 1903 von Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser und Fritz Waerndorfer, ist eine kreative Bewegung der Moderne. Der progressive Zusammenschluss von Kunstlern und Designern wollte der industrialisierten Gesellschaft individuelle Handwerkskunst entgegensetzen und verschiedene Aspekte des Lebens zu einem harmonisch-eleganten Kunstwerk verbinden. Zunachst bestand die Werkstatte nur aus drei kleinen Raumen, weitete sich jedoch schon bald auf ein dreistockiges Gebaude mit Spezialbereichen fur Metall-, Leder- und Holzverarbeitung, einer Buchbinderei und einem Farbenhandel aus. Die Kunstler experimentierten mit verschiedensten Materialien, darunter Gold, Edelsteinen und Pappmache, und wandten ihre schlichten, haufig geometrischen Muster und ihre Designprinzipien auf Keramik, Textilien, Typografie, Innenarchitektur, Mobel und Mode an. Bei Gesamtauftragen wie dem Sanatorium Purkersdorf und dem Palais Stoclet in Brussel konnte die Gruppe ihr Ideal vom „Gesamtkunstwerk“ realisieren, bei dem jedes Detail ein integraler Teil des koordinierten Ganzen ist. Obwohl die Werkstatte nur 30 Jahre lang bestand, hatte sie gro?en kommerziellen Erfolg und konnte Dependancen in Karlsbad, Marienbad, Zurich, New York und Berlin eroffnen. Viele fuhrende Kunstler der Zeit, darunter Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka und Egon Schiele, steuerten Entwurfe bei.
